The Giant’s Causeway is one of those bucket list places that we’ve always wanted to see. This incredible natural phenomenon is only a bit over an hour away from Belfast, so we booked a day trip through Get Your Guide. We chose this tour: From Belfast: Giant’s Causeway and Game of Thrones Day Tour. Even though we haven’t even watched Game of Thrones (sorry!), it had lots of amazing reviews so we had to give it a try. As we rely so heavily on reviews when booking, we’ve written this post to give you a detailed and honest review of this tour. That way you can make the most of your trip to see the Giant’s Causeway from Belfast!

What a dream to see this in person!

Tour Overview

Firstly you’ll have to make your way to the Allen’s Tours office in the city. From there you’ll jump on a bus with the rest of the group and head off with the tour guide. The first stop just outside of Belfast is Carrickfergus Castle. Here you’ll have 20-30 minutes to look around outside the castle. You can also go in for only £6, but with the limited time, we didn’t bother.

From there, you’ll drive to a couple of different photo spots, passing by lots of beautiful scenic spots on the way. Eventually you’ll get to the Hedges Hotel where you’ll have one hour for lunch and to look around. While you’re here, make sure to walk to the lane of Beech trees that was used for the King’s Road in Game of Thrones. It’s one of the coolest streets we’ve seen!

After that, the current listing says you’ll stop at the Old Bushmills Distillery for a 30 minute whisky tasting. When we did this tour in 2023 we didn’t do this but instead just went straight to the Giant’s Causeway. Here you’ll have almost an hour and a half to look around, take photos and enjoy the amazing scenery. You’ll then drive back to Belfast, stopping along the way for more photo stops and passing more incredible sights.

Highlights

There were so many highlights of this tour for us. The number one being how easy it was to get to the Giant’s Causeway from Belfast. It was the main thing we wanted to do while we were in Belfast so we knew we had to to a tour. You can drive there in only one hour 20, and while you can get there via public transport, it takes almost double the time. The public buses also only take you on the inland route, skipping all the gorgeous sights along the way. For these reasons the Get Your Guide tour really was the easiest and best way to see it.

Our main highlight was obviously seeing the Giant’s Causeway, which really lived up to all our expectations. It truly is the most surreal place, both the rocks but also the hills around them. We also felt like the amount of time this tour gave us there was more than enough to really feel like we saw and experienced the area. And while we aren’t Game of Thrones fans, we enjoyed getting to see the beautiful locations. As well, apart from the locations, the tour wasn’t super Game of Thrones themed so that was perfect for us.

Apart from the Giant’s Causeway, we just loved how many places we stopped at and passed by. There are so many gorgeous places on the way from Belfast up to the top of Northern Ireland. There is an inland route which you take on the way back, but taking the scenic route on the way there was really special. We were also so lucky because it had snowed the night before, meaning the views were even more magical!

A view over an orange cliff with green grass on it in Northern Ireland. There's a couple of little islands off the mainland too and there's some green grass close to the camera. The water is very blue and the sky above is cloudy. "Giant's Causeway from Belfast: Get Your Guide Review"

Lowlights

To be honest there weren’t many lowlights with this tour. It’s a reasonably long day out at 8.5 to 9 hours from start to end. There’s also at least 3 hours of driving so do take that into consideration when booking.

Another thing to take notice of is that the price of lunch isn’t included in the price of the tour. The tour stops at the Hedges Hotel where there is a buffet lunch available. You can take your own food in, however the buffet lunch is tasty and has a lot of different options. When we visited in 2023, it cost us about £10 each so really was pretty affordable for the amount of food we got. Unfortunately if you don’t bring your own food, there is no where else to eat nearby so you will have to pay for the pub lunch.

If you’re after a tour that is ALL about Game of Thrones, then this tour may not be for you. It was more focussed on the beauty of Northern Ireland and taking you to the Giant’s Causeway from Belfast. There were definitely Game of Thrones mentions but it wasn’t too intense or common. As mentioned, this was great for us but if you’re a super fan, there may be a better tour out there for you.

Overall though, we wouldn’t say that this tour had any downsides. If you’re after the perfect day trip, you can reserve your spot here!

Would We Recommend It?

We would absolutely recommend this tour if you have a spare day while in Belfast. You get to see so much of the beauty of Northern Ireland with such ease. The buffet lunch was super tasty and the traditional pub you stop at is very cute with a nice view. The Game of Thrones stops were really beautiful, but there isn’t a huge amount of talk about the show which was perfect for us. We had enough time at the Giant’s Causeway to take it all in, and we didn’t think there was too much driving to get there and back.

Even with the need to pay for lunch, we loved this tour and are super glad we did it. Especially as they’ve seemed to add an extra stop at the Old Bushmills Distillery for a whisky tasting since we did it. You get to see so many beautiful places and it really was such an easy and great way to see the Giant’s Causeway from Belfast!
