Luxembourg City is a wonderful little city and is the capital of Luxembourg, the seventh smallest country in Europe. Surrounded by Germany, Belgium and France, this country has a wonderful mix of cultures. Its absolutely worth a visit anytime of the year and it’s also more than possible to see Luxembourg City in a day, which we have written a separate post on. However, we do think visiting in the Christmas period is a particular special time to visit this city. There are so many wonderful markets to explore and the whole place has a lovely vibe to it. Based on our experience, we’ve written this post so you can really make the most of Christmas in Luxembourg City.

Christmas Markets

There are six different locations of Christmas markets in Luxembourg City:

Lëtzebuerger Chrëschtmaart

This is the main Christmas market in the city located in Place d’Armes, the main town square. Here there are roughly 40 different chalets selling delicious things like bratwurst, noodles, churros, chocolate covered fruits and hot drinks. There’s also lots of chalets selling wooden items, souvenirs, and other arts and crafts. At this market you will also find a cute little carousel, a big Christmas tree and a nativity scene.

In 2025 this market was open from the 21st of November 2025 to the 4th of January 2026. It is open every day from 11am to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday is open till 10pm.

Wantermaart

This is another large Christmas market in Luxembourg City with another 40 chalets. It is held at Place de la Constitution right where the Monument of Remembrance or Gëlle Fra is. Because of where this market is, it has a beautiful view down into the valley and over the Pétrusse river. At Wantermaart or Winter Market you will find a ferris wheel, a couple of rides for kids, and a little trampoline attraction. There’s also a large Christmas tree and an indoor section. The chalets sell a mix of savoury food, sweet food and arts and crafts so there’ll be something for everyone.

In 2025 this market was open from the 21st of November 2025 to the 4th of January 2026. It is open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm.

Sapin Royal

This is just a little market located right near the Hamilius tram stop. Here you will find 6 chalets selling savoury food, churros, waffles, and hot drinks. The best part of this market is the 10m high Christmas tree with different decorations on different levels, including a moving train.

In 2025 this market was open from the 21st of November 2025 to the 4th of January 2026. It is open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm.

Wanterpark

This unique market is set up in the Municipal park of Luxembourg, Kinnekswiss Park. It is the only market in Luxembourg City with an ice skating rink, and the rink is a decent size too. You can enjoy skating for only €6.00 or €10.00 with skates for 1 hour and there’s music in the evening too. The rest of the market has a couple of gourmet food stalls and lots of tables to sit at. There’s also lots of Christmas lights up so if you want a fun night of skating and good food, this would be the place for you.

In 2025 this market was open from the 21st of November 2025 to the 4th of January 2026. It is open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm.

Niklosmaart

This market is located just outside the city at Place de Paris, only a 15 minute walk from the city or a quick tram. The biggest point of this Christmas market is the giant Christmas tree which in 2025 was covered in gingerbread men and candle decorations. There are around 15 chalets on both sides of the main road that sell both savoury and sweet food, and hot drinks. There’s also some selling arts and crafts and a little Santa hut where kids can meet Santa (at certain times). Lastly, there is a great little swing ride for children and live music most evenings.

In 2025 this market was open from the 21st of November 2025 to the 4th of January 2026. It is open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm.

Winterkids

Lastly, this is a Christmas market designed entirely for kids and their families. It is located at Place Guillaume II, very close to the main market at Place d’Armes. Here you will find rides, a giant slide, and a giant advent calendar and changes every day. Closer to Christmas there will also be workshops, shows, concerts and other entertainment available to keep everyone entertained.

In 2025 this market was open from the 21st of November 2025 to the 4th of January 2026. It is open every day from 11am to 9pm and on Friday and Saturday is open till 10pm.

Helpful Tips and Tricks

  • All of these markets are within walking distance of each other, however you can take the number T1 tram from the Sapin Royal market to the Niklosmaart market if you like.
  • A lot of stalls accept card, but some do only accept cash so it would be helpful if you had a bit of cash with you.
  • There are collectible mugs at every stall that sells drinks, and there’s lots of fun ones to get. When you purchase a hot drink the price of the mug will be automatically added in. After you’ve finished your drink you can either keep the mug, or return it for a refund of the mug price. However this will be paid out in coins, so take that into account if your planning to get one.
  • It does get very cold in Luxembourg during the winter, so rug up. All of the markets are outside with barely any indoor space. The ice rink at Wanterpark is outdoor too so this is something to remember when packing for your trip.

Christmas in Luxembourg City truly is such a magical experience. Being such a small city, the vibe at Christmas time is so special and there are decorations and markets all over the place. It’s also more than possible to see them all in one night and in all their lit up glory, especially as it gets dark around 4:30pm. If you’ve been or are going to experience Christmas in Luxembourg City, let us know! It’s such a cool and unique place to spend some time around Christmas and you’re going to have a wonderful time.
