Cologne has some of the most amazing Christmas markets we have ever seen. We travelled there to fulfil a dream of visiting real German Christmas markets and it definitely delivered. The city houses so many different and incredible markets all with different things to buy and look at. Because of this, we decided to write a list of some of our highlights, to help you have as magical a time as we did exploring the incredible Cologne Christmas markets.
In this post:

Cathedral Christmas Market
The biggest Christmas market in the city, this amazing market is in Roncalliplatz, in front of the Cologne Cathedral. This is often the one you’ll see photos of, with a big Christmas tree surrounded by little red roofed huts and a huge canopy of Christmas lights which looks incredible lit up in the evening. Under the lights, you’ll find a stage which has a great program running every day. It includes a mix of performances by orchestras, small bands and solo artists as well as children’s programs. There’s a couple of shows a day at 2:30, 4:30 and 7:30pm and they’re all free to watch.
The market has over 140 stalls selling SO many amazing things. You’ll find products like handcrafted wooden products, art, jewellery, lights, fabrics, glass items and ceramics. Of course there’s so much incredible food, it’s overwhelming to decide what to eat. You’ve got the traditional German potato pancakes, bratwurst, kaiserschmarrn sweet pancakes, roasted nuts and gingerbread. Then there’s crepes, churros, raclette, dumplings, Vietnamese and vegan options too. There’s also a huge array of baked goods including waffles, cinnamon rolls and cream puffs.
For drinks, there’s drink huts everywhere where you can buy mulled wine and hot chocolates, both alcoholic or not. Here, the drinks are served in collectable mugs, which will have a deposit included in the price. You can then decide to keep the mug, or return it and get your deposit back in cash. There are also bigger huts which include indoor areas to sit and enjoy beer and other drinks.
In 2025, this market ran from November 17th to December 23rd, but was closed on November 23rd for Totensonntag, a public holiday. The opening hours vary by day, but is open until at least 9pm on weeknights and 10pm on weekends.

Heinzels Wintermärchen
Heinzels Wintermärchen is the most incredible market in Cologne’s old town. It was our favourite of our Christmas Market trip! As well as over 100 different stalls, this is also where you’ll find the big ice skating rink. This market is themed and spread over many different alleyways across Alter Markt and Heumarkt.
Alter Markt (Old Market)
The first part of the market is in Alter Markt or Old Market, a little square only a 5 minute walk from Cologne Cathedral. This market is Brownie themed, and not the food, they are elves or goblins from Scottish folklore. The German variant is called Heinzelmännchen and their story is often told around Christmas time. It is said that these spirits came out during the night to help the citizens with household chores but were driven away when a tailor’s wife discovered them. For this Christmas market, they come out once a year to transform the square into a beautiful Christmas wonderland.
In this gorgeous market you will find delicious food, a Ferris wheel, and a little square with a fountain. However, what makes this market so unique is that you can see people actively creating things. There is a stall where people are making horseshoes and another with people making ceramic items. It makes for very interesting watching to stand and watch them work for a while. Then if you want to buy anything, you can really know it was created right there at the market.
The theme at this market is truly magical and it was one of our favourites to visit on our Cologne Christmas markets trip. In 2026, it will be open from November 23 to December 23 everyday from 11am to 10pm. Once you’re done there, head down the little alley into Heumarkt.

Heumarkt
In Heumarkt, the vibe is more modern, but you will still see some cheeky elves if you look around. In 2026, it runs from November 23 to January 3rd, but is closed on Christmas eve and Christmas day. The market is open from 11am to to 10pm, then after Christmas is open till 9pm. At Heumarkt there’s stalls with food and indoor drinking places, but the biggest part of this market is the ice skating rink.
This open air rink is open every day of the market and costs €9 Monday to Friday and €11 on the weekend. You can also get a reduced ticket of €5.90 if you go during the last hour of skating. The opening times are 11am to 9:45pm, then from December 26 from 11am to 8:45pm. If you do decide to go skating, you can buy tickets online or just at the gate when you enter.
If you have bags, there are lockers but you will need cash to use them. We didn’t have any so we put our shoes under a chair and skated with our backpacks on, which no one seemed to mind. The rink itself is super fun, with two straights of over 100m long and a bit going round a statue. There’s also places to get off the rink and have a sit and a break if you need it.
If skating isn’t your thing, there is also an area for ice stock, which is essentially curling. Prices vary depending on the day and time, but range from €69 an hour to €176 an hour. You can have up to 12 people on a rink, but they recommend only 8 to 10 per rink. Again you can book tickets online, or at the gate during the day.

Nikolausdorf Market
Set in the little Rudolfplatz square, this market has the amazing backdrop of the Hahnentorburg gate. This restored 13th century landmark used to be a part of Cologne’s city walls and has two towers with an archway in between. The theme of this market is like being in St. Nicholas’ village and is seen as more family friendly. With charming wooden huts covered in fairy lights, there is a great mix of food, drink and souvenirs. You’ll also find the collectable Nikolausdorf mugs here which differ from any other market in the city.
At this market there is also a stage which has daily performances from 6pm, as well as visits from St. Nicholas between 4 and 4:30pm. For kids, there is also St. Nicholas house where kids can join in on crafting activities run by staff members. In 2025 the Nikolausdorf market was open from November 17 to December 23. Hours wise, it is open from 11am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday.

Markt der Engel
This is a gorgeous market unsurprisingly themed around angels with clean white and black matching huts. This market has so many stalls selling handcrafted items so is the perfect place to pick up a gift. There’s even a full indoor stand selling hundreds of different Christmas ornaments that’s great fun to wander around. Of course there is also some amazing food and drink, with another collectable cup you can keep if you want.
Something we particularly loved at this market was a stall selling Baumkuchen, which we hope will be around every year! Baumkuchen, which translates to “tree cake” or “log cake” in German, is a multi layer cake cooked on a rotating spit. It has a delicious caramelised flavour and you can buy sections of it covered in chocolate as well.
For kids there are performers wandering around talking to children and giving out gifts, as well as many musical performances. In 2025 the Markt der Engel was open from November 17 to December 23. Hours wise, it is open from 11am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday.

Even More Markets!
- Harbour Christmas Market: This Christmas market is set in a square next to the Cologne chocolate museum. With boats in the background, little white tents line the Rhine selling food, drink and souvenirs. In 2025 this market was open from the 14th of November to the 23rd of December. From Sunday to Thursday it is open from 11am to 9pm and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday.
- Stadtgarten Market: Slightly outside the city in Stadtgarten, this market is less touristy and more traditional. It focuses more on craft stalls and is smaller than others, but surrounded by trees it is a beautiful market to visit. In 2025 it was open from the 14th of November to the 23rd of December. From Monday to Friday it’s open 4pm to 9:30pm and on the weekend from 12pm to 9:30pm. There’s also an opening concert at 6pm on the first day of the market.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, there are so many amazing things to see at the Cologne Christmas markets. The individual theme of each market makes it so exciting to wander through them all and look at the little details. Of course the cathedral market is the most iconic, with the beautiful building in the background, a large Christmas tree and lots of amazing stalls. Heinzels Wintermärchen is perhaps the most magical with the fantasy theme, but Nikolausdorf and Markt der Engel are gorgeous too. And if you’ve got more time still, there’s even more markets to visit on either side of the city centre.
However much time you’ve got to wander, you are guaranteed to have a magical time exploring the amazing Cologne Christmas markets.
